  • Understanding Mutations: Causes, Types & Effects
A change in the hereditary instructions of an organism is called a mutation.

Mutations are changes in the DNA sequence of an organism. These changes can be small, such as a single nucleotide change, or large, such as a deletion or insertion of a whole gene. Mutations can be spontaneous or induced by environmental factors such as radiation or chemicals. They can be harmful, beneficial, or have no effect on the organism.
