    The sequence of nucleotides in DNA is referred to as the genetic code.

    Here's why:

    * Nucleotides: DNA is made up of building blocks called nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of a sugar (deoxyribose), a phosphate group, and one of four nitrogenous bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T).

    * Codons: The genetic code is read in groups of three nucleotides called codons. Each codon specifies a particular amino acid, or signals the start or stop of protein synthesis.

    So, it's not a single component like a base or a sugar, but the arrangement of the nucleotides that forms the genetic code and carries the instructions for building and maintaining an organism.
