Here's why:
* Neurons are highly specialized cells: They are responsible for transmitting information throughout the nervous system. Their complex structure and function make them difficult to replace.
* Limited capacity for regeneration: While some limited neuron regeneration can occur in certain brain regions, it's generally not a significant process.
* Mitosis in neurons is rare: Neurons mostly enter a state called G0, where they cease dividing. This is why damage to neurons is often permanent.
Important note: While neurons generally don't undergo mitosis, there are exceptions. Some research suggests that some neuron populations in the brain might retain the ability to divide under certain conditions.
