  • Nobel Prize 1968: Discoverers of the Genetic Code - Nirenberg, Khorana, Holley
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1968 was awarded jointly to Marshall W. Nirenberg, Har Gobind Khorana, and Robert W. Holley "for their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis".

While all three scientists played pivotal roles in deciphering the genetic code, Nirenberg and Khorana are often specifically credited with its elucidation. Nirenberg was the first to break the code, demonstrating the role of specific codons in determining specific amino acids. Khorana, on the other hand, developed methods for synthesizing specific DNA sequences, which helped further validate Nirenberg's findings and ultimately led to the complete deciphering of the genetic code.
