  • Hair: Is It Alive? Understanding Hair's Composition
Hair is not a living organism. While it originates from living cells in the hair follicle, once it emerges from the skin it is essentially a dead structure made of keratin, a protein.

    Here's why:

    * No metabolic activity: Hair does not have its own metabolism, meaning it cannot produce energy or maintain its own structure.

    * No cell division: Hair cells do not divide or grow once the hair strand has emerged.

    * No response to stimuli: Hair does not react to stimuli like touch, heat, or cold.

However, while hair itself isn't alive, the hair follicle, from which hair grows, is a living structure with its own cells and processes.

Think of hair like a fingernail – it grows from a living source, but once it emerges, it's just a dead structure made of protein.
