  • The Origin of the Word 'Protein': A Historical Perspective
The word "protein" originates from the Greek word "proteios", meaning "of primary importance" or "first rank".

This name was coined by the Dutch chemist Gerardus Johannes Mulder in 1838. Mulder was studying the composition of various organic substances and noticed that many of them contained a high proportion of nitrogen. He believed this nitrogenous substance was essential for life and called it "protein" because he considered it to be of primary importance for living organisms.
