  • Animal & Human Tissue Types: A Comprehensive Guide to 4 Classifications
The four basic types of animal tissue are:

    1. Epithelial tissue: This tissue covers the surfaces of the body, lines internal organs and cavities, and forms glands. It acts as a barrier, protecting underlying tissues, and plays roles in absorption, secretion, excretion, and filtration. Examples include skin, lining of the digestive tract, and the lining of blood vessels.

    2. Connective tissue: This tissue provides support, connects and binds other tissues, and helps protect organs. It is characterized by cells scattered within a matrix of extracellular material. Examples include bone, cartilage, blood, and adipose tissue (fat).

    3. Muscle tissue: This tissue is responsible for movement, both voluntary and involuntary. It is composed of cells that can contract and relax. The three types of muscle tissue are skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle.

    4. Nervous tissue: This tissue is responsible for communication and coordination within the body. It is composed of specialized cells called neurons that transmit signals through electrochemical impulses. Nervous tissue is found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
