  • Understanding Binomial Nomenclature: Genus and Species
The two names we use to identify a specific organism are its genus and species. This is known as binomial nomenclature.

For example, the scientific name for humans is *Homo sapiens*.

    * Homo is the genus, which groups together closely related species.

    * sapiens is the species, which designates a specific type of organism within the genus.
