  • Who Discovered the Structure of DNA? James Watson & Francis Crick
The scientists primarily credited with establishing the structure of DNA are James Watson and Francis Crick.

While they were not the first to study DNA, their groundbreaking 1953 paper in Nature provided the double helix model that we recognize today. They were able to build upon the work of other scientists, including:

    * Rosalind Franklin: Her X-ray diffraction images of DNA were crucial in revealing its helical structure.

    * Maurice Wilkins: He worked with Rosalind Franklin and provided Watson and Crick with access to her X-ray images.

    * Erwin Chargaff: His research on the base composition of DNA (Chargaff's rules) provided essential information for understanding DNA's structure.

While Watson and Crick's model was revolutionary, it's important to acknowledge the contributions of these other scientists who played significant roles in unraveling the secrets of DNA.
