  • Early Biological Classification: The Missing Microorganisms
The first classification systems, like those of Aristotle, primarily focused on animals and plants. They were largely based on observable characteristics, and microorganisms were simply too small to be seen with the naked eye.

Therefore, microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, protists, and viruses, were missing from these early classifications.

It was only with the invention of the microscope in the 17th century that scientists began to discover and classify these microscopic organisms.
