* Multicellular: Animals are complex organisms made up of many cells.

* Usually Mobile: Most animals can move independently at some stage of their life cycle.

* Obtain food from other organisms: Animals are heterotrophs, meaning they cannot produce their own food and must consume other organisms (plants, animals, or their byproducts).

While there are exceptions to each of these characteristics within the animal kingdom, they are generally true for most animals.
