  • Pyramid of Numbers: Understanding Ecosystem Trophic Levels
The model that shows the number of organisms at each trophic level in an ecosystem is called a pyramid of numbers.

    Here's how it works:

    * Base: The base of the pyramid represents the producers (plants) which are the most abundant organisms.

    * Higher Levels: Each level above the base represents a different trophic level (herbivores, carnivores, top predators).

    * Decreasing Numbers: As you move up the pyramid, the number of organisms at each level generally decreases. This is because energy is lost at each transfer from one trophic level to the next.

Important Note: Pyramids of numbers are not always perfectly shaped like a pyramid. Sometimes, the shape can be inverted, for example, in a forest ecosystem where a single large tree can support a large number of insects.
