  • Epidermal Cell Origins: Understanding Skin Cell Renewal
New cells of the epidermis originate in the stratum basale, which is the deepest layer of the epidermis.

    Here's why:

    * Stem cells: The stratum basale contains basal cells, which are stem cells that continuously divide to produce new keratinocytes (the main cell type of the epidermis).

    * Migration: These new keratinocytes then migrate upwards through the layers of the epidermis, undergoing differentiation and changes as they move towards the surface.

    * Replacement: This process ensures a constant renewal of the epidermis, replacing cells that are lost due to natural shedding.

So, the stratum basale is the birthplace of new epidermal cells, essential for maintaining the integrity of our skin.
