Gametes are specialized reproductive cells, such as sperm in males and eggs in females. They contain half the number of chromosomes of a normal body cell (somatic cell), ensuring that when they fuse during fertilization, the offspring receives the correct number of chromosomes.

While other cells in the body also contain genetic information, gametes are the primary carriers of this information from one generation to the next.
