    Biologists classified fungi into a separate kingdom for several key reasons:

    * Decomposers: Fungi break down organic matter, releasing nutrients back into the environment.

    * Symbiosis: Fungi form symbiotic relationships with plants (mycorrhizae) and animals, providing benefits like nutrient uptake or protection.
