  • Phagocytes: The Body's Microbe-Eating Cells - Understanding Phagocytosis
The cell that traps microorganisms is called a phagocyte.

    Here's how it works:

    * Phagocytes are a type of white blood cell that engulf and destroy harmful invaders like bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

    * The process is called phagocytosis, where the phagocyte surrounds the microorganism and engulfs it into a vesicle called a phagosome.

    * Once inside the phagosome, the microorganism is broken down by powerful enzymes and other chemicals.

There are different types of phagocytes, including:

    * Neutrophils: The most common type, they quickly arrive at the site of infection.

    * Macrophages: They are larger and live longer, patrolling tissues and engulfing debris and pathogens.

Phagocytes are crucial for the immune system's ability to fight off infections.
