  • Ribosomal RNA (rRNA): Structure, Function & Role in Protein Synthesis
    The type of RNA that is the major component of cellular ribosomes is ribosomal RNA (rRNA).

    Here's why:

    * Ribosomes are the protein synthesis machinery of the cell. They are composed of two subunits: a large subunit and a small subunit.

    * rRNA is a type of RNA that makes up the structural and functional core of these ribosomes. It helps to:

    * Bind messenger RNA (mRNA)

    * Position the tRNA molecules carrying amino acids correctly

    * Catalyze the formation of peptide bonds between amino acids

    So, while mRNA carries the genetic code and tRNA brings the amino acids, rRNA is the essential component that gives the ribosome its structure and allows it to perform its vital function of protein synthesis.
