  • What is a Chromosome? Understanding DNA's Structure
A single piece of coiled DNA is known as a chromosome.

    Here's why:

    * DNA is the molecule that carries genetic information.

    * Chromosomes are structures within the nucleus of a cell that are made up of tightly coiled DNA.

    * Each chromosome contains a single, very long DNA molecule.

So, while DNA is the raw material, it's the coiling and packaging of that DNA into a chromosome that makes it functional within the cell.
