  • Understanding Bacteria: A Guide to the Three Main Groups
There are many ways to classify bacteria, but the three main groups based on their shape are:

    * Cocci: These are spherical or round bacteria. Examples include *Streptococcus* (which causes strep throat) and *Staphylococcus* (which causes skin infections).

    * Bacilli: These are rod-shaped bacteria. Examples include *Escherichia coli* (found in the gut) and *Bacillus anthracis* (which causes anthrax).

    * Spirilla: These are spiral or corkscrew-shaped bacteria. Examples include *Treponema pallidum* (which causes syphilis) and *Helicobacter pylori* (which causes stomach ulcers).

It's important to remember that these are just three of many ways to group bacteria. There are many other ways to classify bacteria, such as by their metabolism, their habitat, or their genetic makeup.
