  • Innate Immunity: Understanding Your Body's First Line of Defense
Immunity that is genetically determined and present at birth is called innate immunity.

    Here's why:

    * Innate immunity is the first line of defense against pathogens. It's non-specific, meaning it doesn't target specific pathogens, but rather recognizes general patterns associated with infection.

    * Adaptive immunity, on the other hand, develops after exposure to a specific pathogen and is highly specific. It involves the immune system "remembering" the pathogen and mounting a more targeted response in the future.

    Examples of innate immunity include:

    * Physical barriers: Skin, mucous membranes

    * Chemical barriers: Stomach acid, lysozymes in tears

    * Cellular components: Phagocytes (neutrophils, macrophages), natural killer cells

    * Inflammation: A response to tissue damage that helps to fight infection

Innate immunity is present from birth and is crucial for survival. While it's not as specific as adaptive immunity, it provides immediate protection against a wide range of pathogens.
