  • Inoculum: Definition and Role in Microbiological Culture
The correct microbiological term for the tiny sample of specimen that is put into a nutrient medium in order to produce culture is inoculum.

    Here's why:

    * Inoculum: This refers to the small amount of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc.) introduced into a culture medium to start the growth process.

    * Culture: The resulting growth of microorganisms from the inoculated medium is called a culture.

Therefore, the inoculum is the "seed" that initiates the growth of a microbial culture.
