Homologous chromosomes are a pair of chromosomes, one inherited from each parent, that share the same genes at the same loci (locations on the chromosome). While they carry the same genes, the specific versions, or alleles, of those genes can differ between the two chromosomes. This means that homologous chromosomes carry the genetic information for the same traits, but may have different instructions for those traits.
