  • Meiosis and Gametes: Understanding Sexual Reproduction
The cells that reproduce through meiosis are gametes, which are also known as sex cells.

    Here's why:

    * Meiosis is a specialized type of cell division that results in four daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell. This is essential for sexual reproduction.

    * Gametes are the reproductive cells responsible for carrying genetic information from one generation to the next. In humans, these are sperm cells in males and egg cells in females.

    * During fertilization, a sperm and egg cell fuse, combining their halved chromosome sets to create a zygote with a full complement of chromosomes.

So, meiosis is specifically designed to produce gametes with the correct number of chromosomes for successful sexual reproduction.
