  • Chromatids vs. Chromosomes: Understanding the Difference
    Each individual chromosome is called a chromatid when it is duplicated and joined to its sister chromatid by a centromere.

    However, when the duplicated chromosomes separate during cell division (mitosis or meiosis), each individual chromosome is then called a chromosome again.

    So, the term "chromatid" is used specifically when a chromosome is duplicated, while "chromosome" is used for both the duplicated and unduplicated forms.
