  • Understanding Chromosome Number in Sex Cells: A 24-Chromosome Example
An organism with 24 chromosomes in each body cell (diploid number) will produce sex cells (gametes) with 12 chromosomes (haploid number).

    Here's why:

    * Diploid cells have two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.

    * Sex cells (gametes), like sperm and egg cells, are haploid, meaning they only have one set of chromosomes.

    * Meiosis is the special cell division process that produces gametes. During meiosis, the chromosome pairs separate, resulting in daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes as the original cell.
