  • Langerhans Cells: Your Skin's Immune Defenders
The cells of the skin that are active in the immune process are called Langerhans cells.

    Here's why:

    * Langerhans cells are a type of dendritic cell found in the epidermis (outer layer) of the skin.

    * They act as antigen-presenting cells (APCs). This means they engulf foreign invaders like bacteria, viruses, or allergens and present fragments of these invaders to other immune cells like T lymphocytes.

    * This presentation triggers an immune response, helping the body fight off infection or neutralize the allergen.

Other skin cells also play roles in immunity, but Langerhans cells are the primary ones directly involved in antigen presentation and initiating immune reactions within the skin.
