  • Understanding the Sugars in DNA: Deoxyribose & Ribose
DNA contains two types of sugar:

    * Deoxyribose: This is the primary sugar found in DNA. It's a pentose sugar (5-carbon sugar) with the chemical formula C5H10O4.

    * Ribose: While deoxyribose is the main sugar in DNA, ribose is found in the precursor molecule to DNA, deoxyribonucleotide. This precursor molecule is made up of a ribose sugar, a nitrogenous base, and three phosphate groups.

So, while deoxyribose is the sugar found in the backbone of the DNA molecule, ribose is involved in its formation.
