  • Robert Hooke: The Scientist Who First Observed Cells | Scientific History
The scientist credited with first observing cells is Robert Hooke.

In 1665, using a microscope he built himself, Hooke examined a thin slice of cork. He noticed small, box-like compartments which he named "cells" because they reminded him of the cells in a monastery. While he didn't see living cells, his observations were the first to reveal the basic building blocks of living organisms.
