  • Heterotrophs: Understanding Organisms That Consume Food for Energy
    An organism that obtains its energy from the food it eats is called a heterotroph.

    Here's why:

    * Hetero means "other" and troph means "nourishment."

    * Heterotrophs cannot make their own food like plants (which are autotrophs).

    * They rely on consuming other organisms (plants, animals, or decaying matter) to get the energy and nutrients they need to survive.

    Examples of heterotrophs include:

    * Animals

    * Fungi

    * Bacteria

    * Parasites
