  • What are Amino Acids? The Building Blocks of Proteins
    The monomers that link together to form proteins are called amino acids.

    Here's why:

    * Proteins are polymers: They are large molecules made up of repeating smaller units.

    * Amino acids are the building blocks: Each amino acid has a central carbon atom attached to:

    * An amino group (-NH2)

    * A carboxyl group (-COOH)

    * A hydrogen atom (-H)

    * A unique side chain (R group) that varies between different amino acids.

    * Peptide bonds: Amino acids link together through peptide bonds, where the carboxyl group of one amino acid reacts with the amino group of another, releasing water.

    So, proteins are long chains of amino acids linked together in a specific sequence, and the sequence determines the protein's unique structure and function.
