  • Plant Pigments: How Plants Absorb Light Energy
The plant cell molecules that absorb light energy are called pigments.

The most well-known pigment is chlorophyll, which absorbs primarily red and blue light and reflects green light, giving plants their characteristic color. However, plants also contain other pigments, such as carotenoids (which absorb blue and green light and reflect yellow, orange, and red light) and anthocyanins (which absorb blue and green light and reflect red and purple light).

These pigments are located within organelles called chloroplasts, which are found in the cytoplasm of plant cells.
