  • Autotrophs: How Organisms Create Their Own Food - Definition & Examples
Organisms that are able to make their own food are called autotrophs.

The most common example is plants, which use photosynthesis to convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into glucose (sugar) for energy.

    Other autotrophs include:

    * Algae: Similar to plants, algae use photosynthesis to make food.

    * Cyanobacteria: These bacteria also use photosynthesis.

    * Chemosynthetic bacteria: These bacteria use chemical energy from inorganic compounds like hydrogen sulfide to make food.
