  • Primase: Understanding the Role of this Essential DNA Enzyme
    Primase is an enzyme.

More specifically, it is a DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. This means it uses a DNA template to synthesize a short RNA molecule called a primer.

    Here's why this is important:

    * DNA polymerase (the enzyme that replicates DNA) can only add nucleotides to an existing strand.

    * Primase provides that starting point by creating a short RNA primer that DNA polymerase can then extend.

So, while primase is itself a molecule, its primary function is enzymatic. It's a crucial player in DNA replication, making it possible for new DNA strands to be synthesized.
