The idea that all living cells come from preexisting cells was proposed by Rudolf Virchow.

This idea is a fundamental principle of biology known as cell theory. While other scientists like Robert Hooke and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek made important contributions to the understanding of cells, Virchow's famous phrase "Omnis cellula e cellula" (all cells arise from cells) solidified the idea.
