  • Human Genome Sequencing: From HGP to Complete Maps
The Human Genome Project (HGP), completed in 2003, was the first major effort to sequence all human chromosomes.

While the HGP provided a foundational reference sequence, it was not without gaps and limitations.

In recent years, next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies and large-scale collaborative projects like the Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) Consortium have significantly advanced our understanding of the human genome.

The T2T Consortium achieved a truly complete and gapless sequence of the human genome in 2022, successfully sequencing all chromosomes, including challenging regions like centromeres and telomeres.

So, while the HGP laid the groundwork, it is the combination of NGS technology and the T2T Consortium's efforts that have finally achieved a truly complete and accurate sequence of all human chromosomes.
