  • The Origin of Bacterial Colonies: Starting from a Single Cell
A bacterial colony originates from one single bacterium.

This is because bacteria reproduce asexually through a process called binary fission. In binary fission, a single bacterium replicates its DNA and then divides into two identical daughter cells. These daughter cells then repeat the process, leading to exponential growth and the formation of a colony.
