1. Cytoplasm: The first stage of cellular respiration, glycolysis, occurs in the cytoplasm. This is where glucose is broken down into pyruvate.

2. Mitochondria: The remaining stages of cellular respiration, the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, occur in the mitochondria. This is where pyruvate is further broken down to produce ATP, the energy currency of the cell.
