  • Plantae Kingdom: Definition, Characteristics & Importance
"Plantae" is a broad term that refers to the kingdom of plants, a diverse group of living organisms that are primarily characterized by:

    * Being multicellular eukaryotes: They have complex cells with membrane-bound organelles, including a nucleus containing DNA.

    * Being autotrophic: They produce their own food through photosynthesis, using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water.

    * Having cell walls made of cellulose: This provides structural support and protection.

    * Possessing a life cycle that includes alternation of generations: They alternate between a haploid (gametophyte) and a diploid (sporophyte) stage.

    The kingdom Plantae includes:

    * Mosses, liverworts, and hornworts: These are non-vascular plants, meaning they lack a specialized system for transporting water and nutrients.

    * Ferns and their relatives: These are vascular plants with a complex system of roots, stems, and leaves.

    * Gymnosperms: These are seed-bearing plants that do not produce flowers, such as conifers (pine, fir, spruce) and cycads.

    * Angiosperms: These are flowering plants that produce seeds enclosed within a fruit.

Note: The classification of organisms is constantly being revised and debated. Some scientists may use different systems and include groups like algae or fungi within the kingdom Plantae.
