Cells that DO perform cellular respiration:
* Eukaryotic cells: These include all plant, animal, fungal, and protist cells. They have mitochondria, the organelles where most of cellular respiration occurs.
* Prokaryotic cells: These include bacteria and archaea. While they lack mitochondria, they still carry out cellular respiration in their cytoplasm using enzymes embedded in their cell membrane.
Cells that DO NOT perform cellular respiration:
* Some anaerobic bacteria: These bacteria live in environments without oxygen and use alternative metabolic pathways like fermentation to obtain energy.
Important Note: Even cells that don't use oxygen for respiration still use a simplified version of the process called glycolysis to break down glucose and produce a small amount of ATP. This is a fundamental part of energy production for all living cells.
