  • Meiosis: Understanding the Process of Reproductive Cell Division
Reproductive cells go through a process called meiosis.

    Here's why:

    * Meiosis is a type of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes in a cell by half. This is crucial for sexual reproduction.

    * Reproductive cells (gametes), like sperm and egg cells, need to have half the number of chromosomes as the parent cells.

    * When a sperm and egg cell combine during fertilization, they form a zygote with the full set of chromosomes.

Other important things to know about meiosis:

    * It involves two rounds of cell division, called meiosis I and meiosis II.

    * It produces four daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.

    * It allows for genetic diversity through crossing over and independent assortment of chromosomes.
