  • Vascular Tissues in Plants: Xylem & Phloem - How Plants Transport Materials
The cells that form a system through which water, food, and other materials move in a plant are called vascular tissues. There are two main types of vascular tissues:

    * Xylem: This tissue transports water and dissolved minerals upwards from the roots to the rest of the plant. Xylem cells are dead at maturity and have thick, rigid cell walls that form long, hollow tubes.

    * Phloem: This tissue transports sugars (produced during photosynthesis) and other organic molecules throughout the plant. Phloem cells are living at maturity and have sieve plates that connect them to form a continuous network.

Together, xylem and phloem form a complex network of tubes and vessels that allow for efficient transport of materials throughout the plant. This system is essential for the plant's growth, development, and survival.
