  • Understanding Viral Genetic Material: DNA vs. RNA
Viruses can have one of two types of genetic material:

    1. DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid): This is the same type of genetic material found in humans and most other living organisms. DNA viruses include the herpes virus, the smallpox virus, and the adenoviruses.

    2. RNA (Ribonucleic acid): RNA is a single-stranded molecule that plays a role in protein synthesis. RNA viruses include the influenza virus, HIV, and the common cold viruses.

It's important to remember that not all viruses use DNA or RNA as their genetic material. Some viruses, like retroviruses, contain both DNA and RNA in their life cycle.
