  • Hypertonic Solutions: Understanding Osmosis and Cell Shrinkage
When the concentration of solutes is greater outside the cell than inside, it is called a hypertonic solution.

    Here's why:

    * Hyper means "above" or "greater than".

    * Tonic refers to the concentration of solutes in a solution.

In a hypertonic solution, water will move out of the cell by osmosis to try and balance the concentration difference, potentially leading to cell shrinkage or even death.
