  • Pseudopodia: Understanding Protozoan Movement and Feeding
The fingerlike projections of cytoplasm used by some protozoans for movement and obtaining food are called pseudopodia.

    Here's a breakdown:

    * Pseudopodia (meaning "false feet") are temporary, irregular extensions of the cell membrane and cytoplasm.

    * Movement: Protozoans with pseudopodia use them to move by extending them, anchoring them, and pulling the rest of the cell towards the anchor point. This is called amoeboid movement.

    * Obtaining food: Pseudopodia can also engulf food particles by a process called phagocytosis. The pseudopodia surround the food particle and enclose it within a food vacuole, where it is digested.

Some examples of protozoans that use pseudopodia include amoebas and foraminiferans.
