  • Understanding Infectious Agents: Bacteria & Viruses
The three main types of organisms that cause infections are:

    1. Bacteria: These are single-celled organisms that lack a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. They can cause a wide range of infections, from mild skin infections to life-threatening diseases like pneumonia and sepsis. Examples include E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus.

    2. Viruses: These are even smaller than bacteria and are essentially genetic material enclosed in a protein coat. They require a host cell to replicate and can cause many diseases, including the common cold, influenza, HIV, and COVID-19.

    3. Fungi: These are eukaryotic organisms that include yeasts, molds, and mushrooms. While many fungi are beneficial, some can cause infections like athlete's foot, ringworm, and yeast infections.

While these are the three main categories, it's important to remember that other organisms can also cause infections, such as parasites (like protozoa and worms) and prions (infectious proteins).
