  • Vacuoles: The Cell's Storage Powerhouse - Functions & Importance
The vacuole is the organelle that stores water and waste inside of a cell.

Here's a breakdown of its functions:

    * Water Storage: Vacuoles act as a reservoir for water, maintaining cell turgor pressure (the rigidity of the cell) and keeping the cell hydrated.

    * Waste Storage: They can also store waste products, keeping them isolated from the rest of the cell's cytoplasm.

    * Other Functions: Vacuoles can also store pigments, toxins, and other substances.

It's important to note that vacuoles are particularly prominent in plant cells, where they can take up a large portion of the cell's volume. Animal cells generally have smaller vacuoles.
