  • Cellular Respiration: The Role of Oxygen & Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Processes
    Cellular respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen.

    This is why it's called aerobic respiration.

    Oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain, which is the final stage of cellular respiration. This process generates a large amount of ATP, the cell's energy currency.

    Without oxygen, cells can still produce energy through anaerobic respiration, but this process is much less efficient and produces much less ATP.
