  • Chloroplasts: The Powerhouse of Photosynthesis - Structure & Function
The organelle responsible for photosynthesis is the chloroplast.

    Here's why:

    * Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll: This green pigment is essential for capturing light energy from the sun.

    * Chloroplasts have a complex internal structure: They have a series of membranes called thylakoids, which are stacked into grana. This structure allows for the efficient conversion of light energy into chemical energy.

    * Photosynthesis occurs in two stages: The light-dependent reactions take place in the thylakoid membranes, and the light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle) occur in the stroma, the fluid-filled region surrounding the thylakoids.

So, while other organelles play roles in cell function, the chloroplast is the unique and essential organelle for photosynthesis.
