  • Robert Hooke: Discoverer of Cells - History & Significance
    The scientist who used his primitive microscope in 1665 to observe plant materials and discover their cellular structure was Robert Hooke.

    He observed thin slices of cork under his microscope and saw tiny compartments that he called "cells" because they reminded him of the small rooms monks lived in. This discovery was a major breakthrough in our understanding of living organisms.
