The scientist who proposed that organisms acquired or lost traits during their lifetime by selective use or disuse of organs was Jean-Baptiste Lamarck.

This theory is known as Lamarckism or the Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics. While it is now known to be incorrect, it was an important step in the development of evolutionary theory.
